The Nueces Electric Cooperative Retail Electric Choice Pilot Program began for a select number of NEC members on August 16, 2004. Today, NEC's entire service area is open to retail electric competition (just as our members requested).

On August 18, 2005, NEC began to transition ALL NEC members into the NEC Retail Electric Choice Pilot Program. The process to move all NEC members into competition is to be done geographically, in twenty phases. The initial phases took approximately 9 months and a few final customer transitions are expected to be completed by the early 2007. All affected customers received a letter from NEC approximately 30 days before YOUR service location "entered" competition and this letter provided you with more information.

When NEC opened its service area to competition, it means we have "opened the door" to allow competitive power suppliers (called "competitive retailers" or "CRs") to enter our service area and serve your power supply (power generation) needs. All NEC distribution members are be able to shop for your power supplier from those companies who choose to offer their products and services within the NEC delivery service area. As a newly opened market, your choice of CRs in the NEC service area may be limited at first. However, over time, we hope more CRs will choose to sell electric power to NEC members.

Please understand that regardless of who you choose as your CR, NEC will continue to meet your electricity delivery needs. We'll continue to handle the maintenance and service on the power lines and meters, we'll respond to outage calls, help with new service, and we will bill you for your electric delivery services.

NEC also establishes and enforces customer protection rules that CRs must follow when they serve you. Please click on the fact sheets on the left to learn more about these customer protections.

When all NEC members transitioned into retail competition, NEC's entry into the Texas competitive retail electric market was completed. NEC mailed a notice, a copy of Your Power Guide to Electric Choice with NEC, and a provider list 30 days before each account entered the competitive NEC market. You may also access the Power Guide to Electric Choice anytime, through the links on the left.
