Youth ConNECtions

Nueces Electric Cooperative is committed to our member communities and it's important that the Co-op use its skills and resources to make our communities better places to live, work and raise our children. Together, with our NEC members, we know we can make a difference. NEC is accountable to protect our environment and the health and safety of our customers, employees, and the general public.

NEC’s Youth ConNECtions program focuses on collaborative efforts to bring about meaningful change in teaching and learning. Youth ConNECtions also promotes an understanding of the cooperative business model and electric cooperatives and provides the opportunities for unique learning experiences and scholarship funding for higher education. Spreading the word about using electricity safely is a priority for NEC in our member communities.

Electric Safety Presentations conducted by NEC in area schools and businesses bring the message to stay safe around electricity to life. Electricity offers us productivity in so many ways, but it can also be dangerous and life threatening. We are committed to educate our future generations about being good citizens and about the dangers and responsible handling of electricity. School presentations are targeted to students at the 4th Grade level and other presentation may be targeted to adults in various business industries.

Government-In-Action Youth Tour Contest is open to 10th and 11th grade students whose parent/guardian is a member of NEC. This essay contest gives area students the opportunity to prepare an essay on a define topic and be considered to win a trip of a lifetime to Washington, D.C.

Ramiro De La Paz Memorial Education Scholarship Fund provides an opportunity for high school seniors to apply to win scholarships valued at up to $4,000 for their higher education in Texas accredited institutions. These scholarship are funded by escheated or “unclaimed” capital credits as allowed by the Comptroller of the State of Texas.

Energy Education is a priority for NEC. As a member-owned cooperative, we continually look out for our members’ needs and work to find new, cost-effective initiatives to help our members and those in our communities understand the complex world of energy and the electricity industry.

NEC EnergySuite is an online, interactive resource that allows children, parents, and businesses to walk through potential energy savings with a variety of tools.
