Community Service

Our Duty is to Main Street Not Wall Street!

A lot of corporations talk about community service but we believe action speaks louder than words. NEC continues to make a difference for our neighbors and their communities.

NEC plays an active role in economic development efforts in South Texas. We are dedicated to efforts to keep our small commercial and industrial customers operating. If these businesses go away, so do their jobs which are critical to maintain a strong economy and quality of life for our NEC member families.

Community development efforts are important to us, too. NEC has an active Community Involvement Committee (CIC) made up of consumers representing our entire service area. A few of their activities and programs are highlighted below.

Operation Round-Up

Operation Round-Up, for instance, allows NEC members to voluntarily round-up their electric bills to the next dollar. That few cents each month adds up to thousands of dollars each year for Nueces Charities, Inc. to award community grants to worthy community charitable organizations such as South Texas’ HALO-Flight Air Ambulance Service.

NEC’s Youth ConNECtions program

NEC’s Youth ConNECtions program includes an electrical safety program presented to hundreds of area children by means of a miniature power line model and demonstration. It also includes scholarships for high school seniors whose guardians are NEC members, the Youth Tour Essay Contest for high school juniors who can win a grand prize trip to Washington, D.C., and we provide bookcovers for fifteen area schools containing electric safety messages.

Corpus Christi Relay

The CIC voted in 1998 to organize the first annual Corpus Christi Relay for Life event to benefit the American Cancer Society. Participating as an active partner and organizer of this annual event promises to be a long term commitment for NEC staff and volunteers. NEC dedicates itself to many such events which are not only good for an important cause, but also are good for the community.

NEC staff, with the help of the CIC, hosts Community Blood Drives three to four times each year at the NEC office.

You see, this is not just our service area, it’s our home. We care. We are committed. If you have a community project in which you would like the cooperative to participate, please contact us.
